G20 Summit in Osaka

The G20 Summit was held on June 28-29, 2019 in Osaka.

Leading up to the 2019 G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, thousands of activists from around the world – in Japan, Indonesia, India, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Australia, and the US – have mobilized to protest Japan’s continued financing of coal worldwide.

A petition signed by more than 80,000 people, and endorsed by organizations with millions of members, called on Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to end Japan’s government-backed financing of coal projects.

Japan’s continued government-backed financing for coal projects has been a central theme of the activism, which included a demonstration on the streets of Osaka as the G20 was kicking off.

No Coal Japan is working to ensure the Japanese Government, Japanese financial institutions and corporations stop supporting harmful new coal power projects in Japan and overseas. We are a coalition made up of dozens of civil society organisations, from Japan and around the world, working together to prevent the reckless rise of new coal plants.
