In conjunction with the opening of the Japanese Government's GX Week on the 26th, civil society groups in Japan, Indonesia and other countries took action to protest against the Japanese government's imposition of "false solutions" like hydrogen, ammonia co-firing and LNG.

Ahead of the Japanese Government’s "Tokyo GX Week”, 47 civil society organizations from 14 countries strongly call on Japan to stop forcing superficial measures against climate change to Asia and other countries and instead to provide assistance that is consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement, sustainable and based on communities’ needs.

Wednesday 29 June 2022, Japanese corporations have faced a record number of shareholders backing proposals calling for greater action and transparency on meeting net-zero carbon emissions targets.

On June 22, it was reported that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced to halt Official Development Assistance (ODA) to the Matarbari 2 in Bangladesh and the Indramayu coal-fired power project in Indonesia. The decision by the Japanese government is a victory for local residents who have continued to raise their concerns about the projects despite the harsh conditions of possible repression and human rights violations. It is also an achievement for international civil society who have consistently demanded climate justice and human rights protections.

June 3, 2022 - A global action was held to demand that Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMBC Group) cease its support for fossil fuels, deforestation, and human rights abuses, as the company continues to invest in projects that lead to climate crises such as fossil fuels and deforestation.

On May 17, Mizuho Financial Group (Mizuho FG) published its “Strengthening of Sustainability Actions” (in Japanese). While environmental NGOs welcomed some progress in its revised climate policy, they pointed out that it remains insufficient in light of the Paris Agreement 1.5°C target and call for further strengthening of the policy.
